25 - What Makes Someone a Hero?

A LION HEART is a vague and often confused term used by many. It usually describes a person with a strong will or extreme perseverance in the face of opposition. A lion heart is definitely what a person needs—but a lion heart alone cannot make someone a hero; however, it is a prerequisite of being one.

There are a myriad of things that can make a hero. Say, for example, courage, determination, bravery, perseverance, and sacrifice for others. Wait a minute; a lion heart perfectly describes that. What gets my attention the most is that most of our Filipino heroes (and heroines) have this “lion heart.” So, do you think a lion heart is what makes a hero? YES, ABSOLUTELY YES, a lion heart can make someone a hero.

But like I said earlier, a lion heart alone cannot make a person a hero. It is going to sound weird, but a person needs to have a seed. “A seed, you say? Tell me whyyy,” you might ask. Yes, a seed, a seed that runs in the hot blood of every Filipino. It is not just your average seed; it is the seed that sent our forefathers into battle—against alien foes, against foreign oppressors, against invaders who tried to trample our sacred shores. This particular seed has bloomed down the centuries in acts and deeds of courage with outstanding defiance.

This seed has given life to our first Filipino hero—Lapu Lapu—and it has drove Diego Silang, and Dr. Jose Rizal, with the courage to put an end to all the injustice towards Filipinos that was occurring during their times. Still, the seed does not bloom in every lion heart; consequently, the seed has bloomed in flowers of frustration, such as in the sad lion heart of Emilio Aguinaldo—our first president.

Wait a minute, I have been talking and giving a monologue about Filipino heroes these past few paragraphs, what about the heroes and heroines of other nations? “Does a person need to be a Filipino in order to be considered a hero? Tell me whyyy,” you might ask me. No, a person—regardless of race, religion, and backgroundCAN BE A HERO . . . as long as that person has a lion heart.

A lion heart is what can make the ordinary-looking person you saw across the street into a hero.

(By the way, SNSD's "Lion Heart" was released today and it was the inspiration for this post. Feel free to watch the video below.)
