Do you know any Korean pop songs? Have you ever heard of “Gangnam Style,” “Gee,” “Nobody,” and “Fire?” What do you feel whenever you hear a Korean pop song? Does it make you laugh, or does it make you angry? Whether you love it or hate it, you cannot deny the fact that Korean pop music (commonly known as K-Pop) is very popular here in the Philippines, and also around the world. You simply cannot deny its significance in today’s current pop culture. If you currently hate K-Pop, I am here to enlighten you by sharing a few secrets about the world-famous music genre. If you are already an avid listener of the said genre, you might find out some secrets about the music you have been playing. Believe it or not, listening to Korean pop music might actually be beneficial. For one, it can make people appreciate the culture of Korea; two, it can encourage people to learn the Korean language; and three, it can people them gain more friends, by having the same interest.

Obviously, it makes people appreciate the culture of Korea. Whenever you like something from another culture, you get a taste of that culture—and that is the case with listening to Korean pop music. You get to know more about the culture, the people, and about the country. By listening to the music—which is a part of the culture—you get to see what the culture of Korea is and, eventually, appreciate it, even if it is different from the culture of your country.

Sometimes, you just want to sing along with the lyrics of the song, but most of the time you might pronounce the words incorrectly. This is what leads me to my second reason: it encourages people to learn a new language. I am a living testament to this claim as I am a person who has learned how to speak, read, and write Korean because I wanted to understand the songs that I frequently listen to. Learning a language itself is already a benefit, as it could help you when you in certain times. For example: your employers can use your skills and send you to their Korean branch, and you could easily be hired for jobs that require you to interact with Koreans.

Lastly, you could meet people who are fans of K-Pop, and you might even find out that some of your friends like the genre too, further strengthening your friendship. By having the same interest, it helps people gain more friends. Since a lot of people are interested in the genre, a person will gain more friends by recommending music to each other, by learning more about the language together, and by attending K-Pop events that will be held in that person’s country.

Korean pop music can do many things to a person’s life, but, once again, here are three main things that the genre can significantly do to a person’s life: it can make people appreciate the culture of Korea, it can encourage people to learn a new language, and it can help people gain more friends. You see, Korean pop music is not just a music genre; Korean pop music is a way of life.
